Calie Veelenturf


Callie is a marine conservation biologist and National Geographic Explorer dedicated to ocean conservation. Over the past 4 years, sea turtle conservation has brought her to various countries in Latin America, the Caribbean and West Africa, and she has initiated The Leatherback Project (TLP) for the conservation of leatherback turtles the world over through community empowerment, research and advocacy. Her current research interests include mitigating fisheries bycatch through grassroots community partnerships and campaigns, bycatch reduction technology research, delineation of non-target species coastal habitat use, and the development of effective management strategies. She received a Bachelors of Science in Marine Biology from the University of Rhode Island and a Master’s in Biology from Purdue University.
